"Initiativkolleg" on MODERN MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS and APPLICATIONS Time-frequency analysis and microlocal analysis
This Initiativkolleg proposes a detailed doctoral program in the field of time-frequency analysis and microlocal analysis. Both time-frequency analysis and microlocal analysis are flourishing areas in the center of current mathematical research with an interdisciplinary flavor. They cover a wide range of successful applications in communication technology, signal processing, seismology, and other branches of physics and engineering, and are receiving considerable attention by the scientific community at large. Exciting new directions are emerging through a process of cross-fertilization by interweaving and combining the methodologies of time-frequency analysis and microlocal analysis. The Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Vienna with the proposing groups NuHAG and DIANA is particularly well positioned for these new developments. Both groups are highly visible and recognized on an international level and have a well-established record of collaborating in teaching and research in these fields. The research activities of both groups have recently been evaluated on an international level, and they both have received prestigious awards and major funding (Marie Curie Excellence award EUCETIFA, Oct. 2005 - 2009, START-prize of the Austrian Science Fund, 2005 - 2011, MOHAWI-WWTF project 2005-2008).

The combination of both groups for an Initiativkolleg promises optimal synergistic effects and a gain in creative momentum. Both groups together possess the critical mass and capacity (5 principal researches and 4-6 PostDocs) for the doctoral program and the supervision of the requested number of PhD-students. The integration of teaching and research is essential for the vitality of the research area, and the training of young researchers is regarded an essential and rewarding task by both groups. Young researchers incorporated into this unique research and teaching environment will receive a solid introduction to research in time-frequency analysis and microlocal analysis, have promising prospects for their training in the mathematical sciences, and find a wide range of options and professional perspectives for starting an international scientific careers.

The proposed Initativkolleg offers a well-structured research training environment at the interface of modern analysis and applied sciences. In the view of the proposers, the Initiativkolleg may serve as a model for the future implementation of standardized PhD curricula in natural- or formal sciences at the University of Vienna and is comparable to the US-american VIGRE Program.
