X Mathematical methods for image analysis and pattern recognition FWF PHY08784 1991 1993
sponsored by the FWF, the Austrian Science Foundation
Project Id.: PHY08784
Duration: 2 years
It is part of a major research project (interdisciplinary), co-initiated by H.G.Feichtinger in the summer of 1989 at the FWF Efficient Algorithms for Nonorthogonal Expansions and Irregular Sampling (with applications in image processing).
Within this project, culminating in the thesis of Thomas Strohmer (who has done the major implementation work, but also has developed appropriate new 2D algorithms) and the joint paper "Efficient Numerical methods for non-uniform sampling theory" (Numer.Math.,1995 ) by H.G.Feichtinger, K.Gröchenig and T.Strohmer, both theory and implementations have been very much improved. The combination of adaptive weights methods with the Conjugate Gradient method, together with the use of the Toeplitz structure of the relevant system operator results in the algorithm "ACT" which can be expected to become a standard method in this field. The article in J.Benedetto's book on "Theory and Practice of Irregular Sampling" gives a summary of the results at an early stage of that project.
