Vienna public transport
This is the easiest and most effective means of traveling in Vienna. You can take the underground (U-Bahn; watch out for big blue signs with a white U on them), the tramway or streetcar (Straßenbahn, "Bim"), busses and fast trains (S-Bahn, Schnellbahn).Tickets are available from machines at the stations, you have to validate them at the blue boxes ("Entwerter").
»TicketInfo for tourists
Here some maps for public transport ("Wiener Linien"):
- Rapid Traffic System [PDF]
- Public Transport in the City [PDF]
- Vienna and surrounding area [PDF]
Click here for a »Timetable information.
The underground lines are numbered and colour coded (both on the map and inside the stations): U1 is red, U2 is purple, U3 is orange, U4 is green, and U6 is brown. Yeah, there is no U5, but don't ask why.
On the map, trains (S-Bahn) are blue, the City Airport Train (CAT) is grey.
- » Nearest underground stop: Rossauerlände (U4),
- » Nearest train station: Schlickgasse (D).
»German, English, French, Italian, Spanish
»other languages
From the train stations
Train schedule (in German)» Westbahnhof: Take the orange U3 in the direction to Erdberg, change at Landstrasse to the green U4 in the direction to Heiligenstadt, and get off at Rossauerlände.
» Südbahnhof: Take the tramway line D in the direction to Nussdorf, get off at Schlickgasse.
Alternatively, take a taxi from the stations.
From the airport
From Vienna International Airport (VIE) you can take- any fast train (S-Bahn), or
- the City Airport Train (CAT, faster but more expensive)
to the train station Wien Mitte (= underground stop Landstraße ).
- The Airport bus. It also stops at the City Air Terminal in front of the Hilton Hotel at Landstraße. The underground station is just on the other side of the hotel.
Alternatively, you can take a taxi, although it may be slower and will be considerably more expensive.
By car
Traveling by car is not recommended, unless you are used to Vienna's routes and traffic, and have arranged a parking place. Car parking is extremely difficult, as there are no parking meters and we don't have an dedicated parking lot.We strongly recommend using public transport.
